2015 HOME SHOW

Crown Automotive hosted the annual Lawrence Home Builders Association "Home Show" in the Crown Kingdom for the third year in a row. Businesses started moving into the Kingdom on February 18th. Over sixty businesses participated in the Home Show including Meritrust Credit Union, Heritage Tractor, Custom Wood Products, Pine Family Landscape Center and Jane Bateman Inc. (interior decorating). The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Friday at 11:30 in the morning. Bobby Flory, who is the Executive Director of the Home Builders Association as well as the person in charge of the event, did the honors of cutting the ribbon and opening the Home Show to the public. About 2,100 people attended the Home Show over the three day period. Businesses participated to get their products in front of a larger audience in hopes of expanding their customer base. Many of the attendees of the event came to get a head start on their spring projects. They had the opportunity to make purchases at the event as well as gather information from the different vendors to help them plan for their upcoming home improvement projects. Crimson and Blue BBQ also participated and gave everyone a chance to enjoy some delicious food while they browsed around the Home Show. For more information about the Home Builder's Association and the next Home Show visit their website www.lawrencehomeshow.com.

Habitat for Humanity Fundraiser

Crown Automotive also hosted the annual Habitat for Humanity fundraiser in the Kingdom in early February. Eighty participants purchased tickets to donate to the organization as well as participate in the movie trivia game! The participants broke up into teams and battled in a heated game of movie trivia in hopes of winning prizes. Many of these participants also dressed up as their favorite movie characters! The Kingdom was decorated in all sorts of movie memorabilia including an authentic old school bat-mobile! The Habitat for Humanity organization put on the fundraiser to help fund their housing projects for those in need.

“We build because we believe that everyone everywhere, should have a healthy, affordable place to call home.” - Habitat for Humanity

January Teacher of the Month

The recipient of the WOW! Teacher of the Month for the month of January was Kristi Toews. Kristi is a speech language pathologist at South Middle School in Lawrence. Kristi was nominated for creating a fantasy football league for kids with communication needs in order to help them interact more. Students came together on a weekly basis to update their teams and to talk about the league. While participating in the league students have a common focus, which makes it easier for students with communication needs to work on these skills in a more comfortable and pressure free environment. Kristi also created a similar group for girls to work on their communication skills as well. For winning Teacher of the Month for January Kristi received a $100 gift card from Meritrust as well as a pizza party for her class courtesy of Minsky’s Pizza. Kristi now has a chance to be selected “Teacher of the Year”, win a cash prize for herself as well as her school, and win a free car for a year courtesy of Crown Automotive.

If you know of a teacher in the area that goes over and beyond to help their students visit 6Lawrence.com and vote for them! You can also come to Crown Automotive or Meritrust Credit Union and pick up a nomination form and enter your favorite teacher!

Chili Cook-Off Winners: Tristan Bland, Shelly Myers, and Jon Logan.
Crown Chili Cook-Off!
Crown had their annual Chili cook-off last month and there were plenty of participants competing for the “Golden Gobbler” trophy. The participants included Darin Mangan, Gabe Jacobson, Jon Logan, Thadd Church, Shelly Myers, Kelly Glaze, and Tristan Bland. Tristan has won the last four competitions but he definitely had his hands full this year. This year’s judges were Ted Ross, Laura Augustine, and Keegan Taylor. After a long deliberation the competition ended with a tie for first place as well as a tie for 3rd place. Tristan would prevail, winning by split decision, putting newcomer to the chili cook-off Shelly in second place. Jon Logan also won his tie which landed him in third place. In the post cook-off interviews Shelly explained that her kids were who pushed her to join the competition, and since her pot was the first to be finished it looks like they had a point. Chili Cook-off champion Tristan only pointed to his winning chili.

They also got the chance to take a trip to Clinton Lake to go on an eagle watching tour where they could view and photograph the eagles that are nesting nearby. The event started at 8 a.m. and continued until about 4 p.m. For more information about the event as well as the next Eagle day visit their website kawvalleyeaglesday.com.
