Crown Customer Service Representative, Joe Higdon, Bicycles for Multiple Sclerosis!

Our very own Joe Higdon participated in the MS 150 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society September 14-15.  Joe is an avid bicycle rider and has been a member of the Team Katie for the past six years.  Team Katie began when Joe’s son Justin experienced the disease through his mother-in-law, Katie.  Justin became passionate for the cause after seeing what the disease can do to families who have a loved one with the illness.  Team Katie has grown from three people six years ago to 15 people today.

The Bike-A-Thon is divided up into three routes depending on skill level.  Riders in the two day event can choose from:  1.  The Centennial Route-100 miles each day-Advanced Riders.  2.  Regular Route-75 miles each day-mid level rider, and 3.  Short Route- 36 miles each day-Beginner riders.  The first ten miles is the same route for everyone.  After that, the routes divide.  Team Katie has five members in the advanced level, five in the mid level, and five in the beginner level.  The Bike-A-Thon began at 7:00 am at Garmin in Olathe and ended at 5:30 in Lawrence on day one. Day two began at 7 am in Lawrence and ended at 11:45 in pouring rain at Garmin.

Team Katie has hit the $20K mark in donations over their career, and Joe is currently in the top 200 donor generators.  He is very near moving into the top 150 category and would like your help.  Please support Joe by sending your donations to www.bike4kt.com and click on “Joe Higdon”, or just see Joe in the Volkswagen building.

Letter from the 2013 "Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer" Organizers

September 13, 2013
Crown Toyota Scion
Attn: Miles Schnaer
3430 Iowa St
Lawrence, KS 66046

Dear Miles,
Thank you for your support of breast cancer awareness and the “Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer” Dance. Thanks to your generous donation last year you helped raise $67,500 for breast cancer education and prevention! The proceeds from this event helped over 12,000 women get breast cancer screenings and treatments at LMH last year. We hope you will continue to support breast cancer awareness this year as well!

On Saturday, October 26, 2013 Lawrence Memorial Hospital (LMH) Endowment Association will host the 21th anniversary “Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer” Dance. Proceed from the dance’s 700+ attendees and corporate sponsors will assist breast cancer awareness through early detection, education, treatment, support and equipment at LMH. We ask that you consider joining us in this mission by making a donation to the Stepping Out  Against Breast Cancer Dance. Our goal this year is to raise at least $68,000!

One in eight women will get breast cancer. Think about eight women you know – your mom, wife, sister, aunt, friend, co-worker, employee, neighbor. Early detection is the key to surviving breast cancer. When found early, the survival rate at five years is 96 percent. Each year 150 women in our region have had mammograms as a result of the Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer event, with many other receiving education and support. LMH has significantly enhanced the quality of care to both men and women in our community through the coordinated services that its staff provides. You can help all women and have a great time by “Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer”!

Recently, LMH was named as one of the nation’s Top 100 Hospitals nationwide by Truven Health Analytics. This is the first time LMH has been recognized with this prestigious award. No other hospitals in Kansas or Missouri made the 2013 list. This award belongs to our community and individuals like YOU who have made financial contributions to support LMH.

We greatly appreciate your generous donations to this cause in previous years and hope that you will join us again this year in “Stepping Out Against Breast Cancer”/ Community support is critical to our success in this endeavor, and we know that we can count on you for your support! If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to contact Kathy Clausing-Willis at (785) 505-6134.

Sincerely,

Amy Gustin, Event Co-Chair
